39 Johan Frederick baron van der Merwede was born on 5 May 1785 and was baptized the Kampen bovenkerk on the 8th of May of that year.

He traveled to the United Kingdom in 1805 where he became employed as a lieutenant at the Hannover regiment of the cavalry under the command of colonel Halkett.

He did field excursions with this corps in Portugal (forwarding 1808) and Spain (1813 at Vittoria). Additionally, he was present at the inname of Paris in March 1814 and took part in the battle at Waterloo on 18 June 1815.

Afterwards Johan lived some time in the kingdom of Hannover, supposedly at Stolzenau and at Holhausen. He established himself vervolgens too large Dochteren on the Tente at Laren in Gelderland and for 1835 he left for Goor, where he lived at Grootestraat no.. 70 alwaar he, as "black sheep" of the family, pennyless came die on 23 June 1847. He was vervolgens buried the church courtyard in Goor.

In 1810 Johan had serious problems after being involved in a swindle while under the command of captain Rapperd at the ministry of home affairs. Thereby he and his brother Boldewijn did damage to the name van der Merwede and their titles. As a consequence they and others had serious problems. Johan was in such a bad financial state that he
could not even maintain his own horse. As a result of the swindle he had his salary attached for 20 years. Another consequence was he lost any possiblity of promotion.

Johan was initially to wed baroness van Heerdt. Instead he married Geertruida Catharina Wouters at Stolzenau on 17 January 1821 who was a Roman Catholic, born at Zuthpen on 24 January 1800. Johan was initially in very good standing with the family, but his marriage to a common Catholic girl and his participation in the money swindle damaged his reputation, he became an outcast from the family as a result. Johans brother Boldewijn went into service as a captain with Napoleon. Boldewijn disappeared without a trace at the burning bridges of Dantzig, during Napoleons catastrophic Russia campaign. He was most likely killed or taken prisoner by Russian troops.

After the death of Johan Vrouwe Geertruida Catharina went to Rotterdam with the nine youngest children where she embarked on the F.G. Wichelhousen with a destination of New York.

Johan Frederik?s oldest sister douariere Mollerus (born Johanna Geertruida Juliana Baronesse van der Merwede), wife of esquire Cornelis Adriaan Mollerus, paid the travel expenses for Geertruida Catharine Wouters and her nine children from Goor to America. According to authenticated certificate the payment would buy out any claims to "the wealth of the family" a condition was that they would venture "never to attempt to return to the Netherlands". It concerned an amount of approx. 2500 guilders. This was quite a large sum when you consider 100 guilders per year was a normal household income at that time.
